Just one of those days at Wal-mart!

Well, it was actually turned into an evening, but "days" sounded better...

Derek and I had a few free hours yesterday afternoon (This never happens anymore by the way!!) so we thought we'd make the best of it by doing what?  Walking around Costco and Wal-mart!  I know, we're super exciting...

And amazingly, this time we didn't find anything to blow money on at Costco.  Usually they have at least one or two splurge items that seem to be marketed at us.  But this time Costco didn't have our entry item (our reason for shopping there in the first place), so we couldn't rationalize buying a two pack of SD cards, DVDs or books.  Our entry item this shopping trip?  Romaine hearts.  Costco always has a big pallet full of romaine heart multi-packs.  But not this time... maybe it was a sign.

So we left Costco and made our way to Wal-mart.  We found everything we needed (plus more) and Cadence did great!  Then we decided to get in line to check out and pay.  Since the store was super busy every line had at least four or five customers in line.  And of course we pick the wrong line.  Someone had dropped a check in between two parts of the register and conveyor belt just when we were going to be next in line.  The checker informed us that there would be a long wait and temporarily closed the line.

Hoping to get out of the store sooner, we hopped over a couple of lines.  We were back to where we were in the beginning but thought that it would be faster.  Nope!  We waited and waited and WAITED until finally an employee noticed another line with only one customer in line and escorted us over.

By that time Cadence had HAD it!  She was hungry and SCREAMING! After paying, I went over to the bathroom to make her a bottle.  Or try and make her a bottle.  The sinks were those convenient automatic kind so the water would stay on while I held the bottle underneath.  Very frustrating.  I ended up going to the drinking fountain and felt like such white trash as I set up my can of formula and bottle.

Got that all filled up and tried to shake it up.  That wasn't working for me either.  All I succeeded in doing was get most of the formula powder stuck in the top and splash half-mixed formula all over my shoe.  And of course I was being my dorky self wearing pink crocs with socks.  Pink crocs with socks + spilled formula = soggy toes until I could get home to change.

I bring the bottle over to Derek and he tells me that Cadence's completely soaked up her back.  Great.  Forgot I put a cloth diaper on before we went shopping.  So I take her back to the bathroom--she's still screaming by the way--strap her down to the changing table, and try to change her entire outfit.

Did I mention the changing table wasn't in a stall?  It was in the middle of the bathroom so everybody that walked in and out got to see me trying to take care of the screaming, beet-red faced baby.  That only took forever. And of course, she stopped screaming as soon as I picked her up off the changing table!

When we were finished and all clean, we met Derek in the McDonalds there in the store to eat a hamburger.  Unfortunately he had ordered two cheese burgers (I can't stand cheese burgers, but they were the good deal ended up being not quite as horrible as I thought).  I handed Derek the baby, he fed her, and I tried to decompress.

We won't be going back to Wal-mart for a while.

Derek was very sweet and offered to do Cadence's night time routine so I could have some "me time."  It was great.  The best part?  I found the two of them asleep in the rocker.  Cadence with her hands folded, and Derek seated upright with his head flopped forward.  Too cute!

  2. You are right, the changing table is right by the door. I always try to go to the family restrooms in the back of the store. Much quieter. Not sure many people know that they are back there by the shoes. Every mother is really looking at you in sympathy. We have all been there. I do totally understand the horribly long lines there though. They are always super long. I went today at 10am and it was heaven. Hardly anyone in the store and I was in and out of there in no time. Time of day makes a huge difference.
